Shampoo Alternatives?

I've been pondering switching away from traditional shampoo and conditioner. There's a lot of reasons, including recycling the bottles, chemicals involved, biodegradability, but mostly it's because I've never found anything I'm really happy with.

Wandering around the internet I found post after post about folks who'd switched to scrubbing their hair with simple baking soda and loved it, reporting more healthy manageable hair that wasn't greasy the next day. Coming from a kid who's mother referred to her hair as "stringy" I would love to save the time and water not washing my hair and drying it every day. And it's hippie friendly! And cheap! I'm hoping this is the solution for me.

Anybody out there tried the baking soda, apple cider vinegar route? I'm real interested to know how it goes.

  1. a friend of mine did the baking soda thing for a while. she said her hair was much softer but smelled of baking soda (apparently you can add oils to it for a better smell). i couldn't tell the difference when she switched from no-SLS shampoo to baking soda and back. it definitely works!

  2. I've been doing both for about 9 months and I love it. My hair isn't frizzy anymore when it air dries. And it's soooooo cheap/creates nasically no waste. I'll never go back!

Plus, I feel like I'm sticking it to The Man.
